This gives me so much to think about! I will have to try to remember my own origin story with Joy. Hmmmm, something about making dollhouses out of cardboard boxes… This is a lovely and beautifully written story. I love the idea of cultivating a relationship with Joy.

Oooh…there’s a story in there for sure! I’d love to know who lived in your dollhouse and what the furniture looked like. When I think of joy as an emotion, a noun, it’s impossible for me to connect with the concept, but when I think about being in relationship with joy, suddenly I can see what went wrong and the work I have to continuously do to invite her in to my life. It’s been a transformative shift for me. Thank you for taking the time to noodle on it yourself! 💖

You write so beautifully, Jess. I loved this one, especially when you wrote about asking Joy to sit beside you, so you knew it still existed. Wow. I felt that. ❤️❤️

Thank you so much for reading and for your kind words! I can only imagine that you know all to well what it's like to not be able to embrace or experience joy but to desperately need to know its still there. ❤ with you!

This is marvelous. I feel like it sparkles with impish delight. You tell a story so well, and I love the way you’ve connected the dots to form a constellation of joy. It’s so true what you say about joy being a fickle romance. I’d never thought about it like that before, but it’s not like you can be joyful all the time. It comes and goes and you have to work at it … just like any other relationship. Thank you for that reminder, and for the wonderfully entertaining telling of your origin story. And now I want more about your dancing! 💃

I can feel your 😊 coming through this comment, and that makes me happy. I can't speak for everyone's relationship with joy, but mine has certainly been a rocky road. I'm glad this felt like entertainment, and I will now put all references to my former dance career back in the vault, particularly those that involved finger cymbals! 😂
